PERIPHERY PROJECT: ENCAUSTIC

In 2015, I began walking around the periphery of the San Francisco Bay, walking a section one day a week. In this way, over the course of the year, I traced the outline of the bay, taking photographs and posting them online to document my progress. As the weeks went by, the imagery from the bay began filtering into these encaustic paintings, together with the Bay Studies and Salt Studies. The paintings incorporate imagery and soft colors from the bay and cartographical imagery pulled from maps, nautical charts, and satellite imagery. The transparent encaustic paint allows light to penetrate into the painting, creating a water-like glow.
